Nostalgia

[via]

What do you think the youth of 2018 will be nostalgic for when they're older?

And are you Bitches nostalgic for any particular year or era?

  1. In these days don't you mean IF they get older. Besides, with this youth, I sure hope I'm gone by then.

    1. MISTRESS MADDIE: Somehow, the children of the Duck and Cover era made it through to adulthood so we can only hope the same for the youth of today.

  2. I sometimes feel a mix of nostalgia and homesickness for the area south of New Orleans where I grew up in the late 60’s early 70’s. Though with each visit to my family in more recent years that longing is better described by a word I learned from one of you bitches, hiraeth. I would not choose to do it again. Better off remembering the good times than reliving the shitty ones.

    1. Today’s youth will remember when children could play outside or when tap water was drinkable.

    2. HAYWARD: Hiraeth is a beautiful way to describe a mix of longing, yearning, nostalgia, and wistfulness.

Having visited New Orleans and environs several times, I ask myself the questions thousands of others have asked… “Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans?”

I’d only want to revisit the good times too and thankfully, I can do that in my memory.

You’re probably right about playing outside and the water situation. The parks around here are plentiful but often empty. Mind you, any day without kids running up and down my block (get off my lawn!) is a good day but I remind myself that it’s better to see them outside than not.

  4. Blimey, I'm so sentimental I can be nostalgic for last week... but mostly I am nostalgic for shoes I've loved and lost dating from the eighties to present day.

    1. MISS SCARLET: The Mistress shares your shoe secret. There’s a pair of 5-inch high heels in my closet from my teen years. They were selected for me by a drag queen friend on a big night out together. My feet never recovered but I looked stunning on the dance floor.

  6. I would guess the youth of today will be nostalgic for hand held communication devises and the parents who paid for them.

I don't ever want to go back but I do miss things like celebrity-panel quiz shows and variety shows that let the performer simply come out and perform without all the lights and noise and especially the competition that goes with these current shows. I figure if you find yourself on primetime TV singing a song you've already won.

    1. BrianB: I recall that you once reminisced about watching Dinah Shore sing "I'm Sitting on Top of the World" while perched on top of a globe.

You couldn't stop singing "I enjoy being a girl" after watching her sing that on her TV show back when you were just a little gay in training.

I was moved by that image of you, as I am touched by all young gays reaching for the stars. (It’s the Auntie Mame in me.)

And I agree that we could do without the lights and noise and especially the competition that goes with the current shows.

    2. Holy cow, I forgot about posting that story! Those were good times, weren't they?

I do recall when I thought adults were wise, even when my alcoholic uncles were falling face down in their gin and tonics.

  8. I think the yoof may be nostalgic for clement weather and living above ground.

As for me, I'm nostalgic for the early Noughties: Better music, little to no responsibilities, relative yoof, and no Witchface!

    1. MR. DeVICE: In the Noughties, I was nostalgic for better music of an earlier era so I suppose it’s all a matter of perspective.

If it’s any consolation, you’ll always be younger than me.

  9. I do miss the farm of my childhood. Mostly it's the people that I miss, and the wide open spaces and wild places.

I think today's youth will be nostalgic for tuna and honey. The tuna is being overfished and the bees are disappearing. I think the kids will probably miss coastal cities that will now sink underwater due to sea levels rising from climate change.

    1. EROS: I've rambled on at your blog about how much I miss the farm and rural life so I'm with you on that.

I think I'm going to have to lie down with a cold compress to deal with all the things that are disappearing.

  10. I remember when the freeways in Los Angeles were referred to by name, rather than route number. Life was much simpler way back then.

  11. OH, how I miss the early eighties in New Orleans. Sex and drugs and such fabulous music everywhere. It was only money that was in short supply. I lived across the courtyard from the two DJs at this groovy bar called Jewel's and got to be friends with them and thus exposed to much more interesting music than bland little me would ever have known about.

    Fucking AIDS.

New Orleans just added some hot sauce.

    2. Late 70s/early 80s - a scandalously shameless transition, but what followed was inversely bleak.
