Stompin' Tom Connors, OC, (February 9, 1936 – March 6, 2013)
A folksinging, foot-stompin’ troubadour and Canadian music legend, Stompin’ Tom Connors wrote songs about Canada including my personal favourite, Sudbury Saturday Night...
(filmed at the Horseshoe Tavern, Toronto, circa 1973)
Oh, the girls are out to bingo
And the boys are gettin' stinko
And we think no more of Inco
On a Sudbury Saturday night
I once posted this photo of Stompin' Tom and asked if you could foreigners could identify him...
The following are just some of your answers...
Mago: “Mr. "I had my best time 1970"”
Eroswings: “K.D. Lang! Wait...this one is wearing shoes. It's Ian Tyson.”
Ayem8y: “K. D. Lang or Shania Twain - It’s un clear, I’m unfamiliar with Canadian Country singers and I thought you only had the two.”
Kapitano: “Neil Young”
Miss Scarlet: "The man who invented Crocs."
Though he may not have been a household name abroad, Stompin' Tom ranked thirteenth on the Greatest Canadian List.
Stompin' Tom on a Canadian postage stamp...
Stompin' Tom: A great Canadian who will be missed by Canucks from coast to coast to coast.
Let's give Stompin' Tom the final word...
"Hello friends, I want all my fans, past, present, or future, to know that without you, there would have not been any Stompin' Tom."
"It was a long hard bumpy road, but this great country kept me inspired with it's beauty, character, and spirit, driving me to keep marching on and devoted to sing about its people and places that make Canada the greatest country in the world."
"I must now pass the torch, to all of you, to help keep the Maple Leaf flying high, and be the Patriot Canada needs now and in the future."
"I humbly thank you all, one last time, for allowing me in your homes, I hope I continue to bring a little bit of cheer into your lives from the work I have done."
Sincerely,
Your Friend always,
Stompin' Tom Connors

Alvin Lee also died today.
ReplyDeleteLX: And according to Jon’s blog, jazz trumpeter Kenny Ball died today.
DeleteWas there a casting call in the Great Beyond?
That IS kd lang, isn't it? Jx
ReplyDeleteJON: There is indeed a striking resemblance to k.d. lang.
DeleteDid you know that Stompin’ Tom wrote a song about her entitled, Lady kd lang?
Which one is Canada? Cause I think I get it confused with that other one, you know, the one with all the little brown people in it.
ReplyDeletePEENEE: Does this map help?
DeleteGosh ... Your stamps are cheap in price!
ReplyDeletePRINNY: You think so?
DeleteIt costs $1.85 to send a letter internationally.
You don't want to know how much it costs to send a parcel internationally.
Why do you think you haven't received your blowjob bank yet?
A basic postal stamp will cost you 65 cents here...
DeleteRIP
ReplyDelete(I'll give a listen whenever I'm alone)
WALLY: You are never alone with Infomaniac Bitches close at hand.
DeleteI learned something today - Stompin Tom Connors. And yesterday, I taught you about Turkish Oil Wrestling. Cultural exchanges are fun.
ReplyDeleteCOOKIE: You’ll be surprised to know that I’ve known about Turkish oil wrestling for some time but I must say your post was excellent and informative and I’m sure you converted Peenee into a sports fag as a result.
DeleteI challenge you to take Infomaniac’s Guess the Canadians quiz.
It was a competition I held before you became an Infomaniac Bitch.
Once you’ve had a look at the images, you can find the answers here.
If you have time to take the quiz, let me know how well you did. You already know at least ONE of the answers!
Stompin Tom is right now taking part in a Turkish Oil Wresling competition at the Gates of Heavens!!!
ReplyDeleteFare thee well, Sir!
HUGGY JON: I challenge YOU to take the “Guess the Canadians” quiz too!

What a sad loss to the music world, I've got one of his albums Ingénue and Constant Craving, according to my ipod count has been played a staggering 6 times! I'll pop it in later to show my respects and make it 7.
ReplyDeleteMITZI: Why not try the Crying duet with Roy Orbison?
DeleteStompin' Tom was a Canadian treasure. I did see him once in concert. Made me proud to be Canadian. Of course, as a Leamington Ontario native, my favourite song was the 'Ketchup Song".

Delete... Wilko Johnson is on his farewell tour, no joke, see him here, skip to 3:40 or so if you are not interested in the talk ...
ReplyDeleteMAGO: Well, THAT answers the question, "what if the doctors told you that you only had nine or ten months to live?"
