SUMMER SONGS: Martha Reeves & The Vandellas – Dancing in the Street
It’s time for another summer song and in honour of Martha Reeves’ 65th birthday (born July 18, 1941) let’s watch a video clip of Dancing in the Street.
Dancing in the Street, written by Marvin Gaye, William “Mickey” Stevenson and Ivy Jo Hunter, was a hit in 1964.
Update: Geoff was hoping for The Mick Jagger – David Bowie version of Dancing in the Street. So here it is…

Not the hilarious Bowie/Jagger version?
ReplyDeleteWhen David comes down the stairs with his hands in his pockets and Mick rolls his sleeves up.
South America!
Geoff: As today is Martha Reeves birthday, I posted the Vandellas version. But as a special treat for you, I'll post the Jagger/Bowie version. It's must-see, really.
ReplyDeletei'll take martha and the vandellas. thats as pure summer as the instrumental 'Green Onions'. remember that from the driving scene in 'American Graffiti'? red hot.
ReplyDeleteFirst Nations: I once performed a dance routine onstage (not THAT kind of dance routine and not THAT kind of stage) to 'Green Onions' dressed in a lime green leotard. Don't bother trying to picture it.
ReplyDeleteReally enjoyed the videos. I like Martha's version but Mick is just so good isn't he!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love this song. Martha's not Mick's. His and David's is ok, I suppose...
ReplyDeleteDid you see one of the comments on the Martha Reeves video? - "They were some UGLY women."
ReplyDeleteEither he needs some bloody strong glasses or he was watching the Jagger/Bowie video.
Sorry I got Jagger's sleeves wrong - must've been a Stones' video.
U are too cool! HURRAY!vczi
ReplyDeleteWell Geoff, it looks like so far Martha's version is in the lead for audience approval. Perhaps if I'd found the version with Mick rolling up his sleeves, then your version would have come out ahead. I admit it was a rush research job on my part.
ReplyDeleteGive me Martha any day!
ReplyDeleteDo you know, I've visited here 4 times already today and not known what to say in the comments, it was such a boring post?
ReplyDeleteI suppose I'll plump for Martha and her gang. Never could stand that weirdo Bowie.
SID: Coño.
ReplyDeletePiggy: Thankfully you've finally livened up your blog with some beefcake of Tazzy. Now please get him to reveal his nipples.
Dancing in the Streets was banned for encouraging riots or so I've heard.
ReplyDeleteI don't see it myself.
Billy: I believe there was some misinterpretation around this issue but I don't know all the details. The lyrics were a call to DANCE but some may have twisted it for their own purposes. It certainly was never intended to create unrest... just the pure pleasure of dancing.
ReplyDeleteThe pure pleasure of dancing? What a load of tosh.
ReplyDeleteIt was created to make money.
By an awful singer.
Piggy: Okay, so it's tosh and it's about the dosh. But we like the song so bugger off. Isn't it shagging time chez Tazzy and Piggy? Please keep the door closed.
ReplyDeleteIt is.
ReplyDeleteYou can come in and watch if you leave 50p in the bowl by the door.
Piggy: I prefer to peep through the keyhole. It's 25p cheaper.
ReplyDeleteLoved both versions and I seem to remember the Jagger/Bowie version was for charity.
